The Vibe
OB has an easygoing, lived-in charm. Flip flops in December, dogs everywhere (there’s a whole beach for them), and a Wednesday farmers market that still feels like a real town gathering.
The housing stock is a mix of charming beach bungalows from the 1920s, low-rise multi-unit buildings from the 70s, and the occasional newer remodel that stands out a little. It’s got character instead of polish, and that’s part of the appeal. There’s a real pushback in this neighborhood against overdevelopment, and it shows in the fact that OB still looks like OB.
Life here tends to revolve around the outdoors: walks to grab a burrito, jaw-dropping sunsets just a short bike ride away at Sunset Cliffs, dog beach mornings, and surf checks before work. It’s a slower, saltier pace than a lot of San Diego.
A Little History
OB was subdivided and named in 1887 by developers Billy Carlson and Frank Higgins, but it didn’t really take off until David “Charlie” Collier built a rail line connecting it to the city in 1909. The neighborhood’s independent, anti-chain character traces back to the 1960s and 70s counterculture era, when surfers and artists put down roots and a strong local pushback against big development took hold and never really let go. That surf culture is still core to OB’s identity today, thanks to consistent breaks that have drawn surfers since the 1950s and a lineup of surf shops and schools along Newport Ave.
Events & Traditions
OB Farmers Market: every Wednesday, 4-8pm on the 4900 block of Newport Ave. Over 100 vendors, produce, flowers, hot food, the whole thing. My favorite stand is the Flavors of East Africa – avoid the line by going early!
OB Street Fair & Chili Cook-Off: the big one. Late June, thousands of people show up for a full day of food, art, live music, and beachfront chaos in the best way.
OB Holiday Parade: the first Saturday of December, you’ll find the streets closed for this family-friendly event with themed floats.
